In the spring term of 1973, I took a full class load but was preoccupied with going home and with what was going to happen with Hillary. Ingrid Bergmans husband was killed, and Humphrey Bogart was put on trial for it. Burke Marshalls friend and former colleague in the Justice Department, John Doar, came to New Haven with his young son to judge the trial. Hillary and I hosted him and were very impressed. It was easy to understand why he had been so effective in enforcing civil rights rulings in the South. He was quiet, direct, smart, and strong. He judged well, and Bogie was acquitted by the jury. �
